In the business world today, businesses are established and created as the demand for their particular specialty increases. The demand for these specialties can come from a multitude of influences. These influences include economic, government, and legal. There are five particular businesses that were established due to the influences talked about earlier. I will talk about each of these businesses, what key economic, government, and legal influences impacted each of the businesses, and my opinion on which company influences had the greatest impact on them.
Huffman trucking is a national transportation company and has approximately 1,400 employees working in 4 locations spanning from Los Angles, California to Bayonne, New Jersey with the main maintenance facility on Cleveland, Ohio. The key economic influence for Huffman is the increase in yearly revenues and customers. The government influence is during World War II, there was a high “demand for carrier services between the factories of the mid-west and from the factories to the port on the East Coast” (2008). H. Huffman, the founder of Huffman Trucking, increased the size of his company to 16 tractors and 36 trailers due to the US Government thus creating a business relationship that exists to this day. The legal influence is primarily to review the multiple types of contracts to include lease, purchase, and shipping.
Kudler Fine Foods
“Kudler Fine Foods is a local upscale specialty food store located in the San Diego metropolitan area. The company has three locations (La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas). Each store has approximately 16,000 s.f. of retail space located in a fashionableshopping center” (2008). The key economic influence for Kudler is to create a one stop food shop for gourmet cooking so customers wouldn’t have to go from one side of town to another to find everything needed to cook their meal. Other key economic influences include expanding services, a frequent shopper program, which will increase revenue, and an increase in efficiency. Kudler’s legal influence is to have attorneys for customer accidents, taxes, and leases. As far as government influences, there aren’t any.
McBride Financial Services
McBride Financial Services specializes in loans for purchasing and refinancing homes. Their mission is “the be the preeminent provider of low cost mortgage services using state of the art technology in the five state area of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota” (2008). The economic influences are to break-even within six months of commencing operations, become a profitable company within one year of operating, and leverage technology to minimize costs. The government influence would be the capability to give out VA loans. Based off the information given, I don’t see any legal influences.
The Elias Group
The Elias Group main goal is to provide small businesses the opportunity to supply goods to the US Government via the General Services Administration. The economic influence is for the founder, Ms. Elias to make the US Government more accessible to the citizens. The Elias Group has a very heavy government influence due to what Ms. Elias has experienced while working as the Deputy Administrator for the General Services Administration. Her experiences are the reason for her establishing this non-profit organization. Their legal influence has to do with them providing consultations to business owners and assisting in getting contracts with the US Government.
Smith Systems Consulting
Smiths Systems Consulting (SSC) is a company consisting of 350 employees that provides information technology services to clients located in the Western United States. Some of SSC’s key economic influences are “providing development solutions to business information processes, integrating business process technology services and support, and strengthening existing business processes by the practical application of new technologies.”() A key government influence is the fact that they provide their services to Huffman Trucking which are associated heavily with the government. The legal influence is the Texas law firm of Gauby & Noone, L.L.C. which performs audits and contract duties for SSC.
Out of the five companies explained above, I believe the Elias Group’s influences had the biggest impact on them because of the amount of experience the founder had within the GSA, which is who the Elias Group primarily works with. That fact that they work with the government and help small business get contracts with them influenced them economically, legally, and greatly affects the government and other businesses.
