Social Anxiety Disorder is one of the most common anxiety disorders amongst the adolescent population. Social anxiety is the extreme fear of embarrassment and daily social situations. This is caused by exaggerated concern with appearance, how a person is viewed socially, and not wanting to be negatively judged by others. People with social anxiety are afraid of doing normal things in front of other people. Feared situations may vary from reading in class, to eating lunch in a school cafeteria, to using a public restroom. Instead of facing their fears in hope to get over them, people with social anxiety tend to completely avoid situations that they think might be humiliating. If their situations cannot be avoided, they tend to get through the situation with a great amount of anxiety, and the symptoms that come with it. Most people who have social anxiety are aware that they should not be as afraid as they are, but they cannot control their fear.
